Penge man held in people smuggling probe
A man has been arrested by the National Crime Agency to face extradition proceedings as part of an international investigation into people smuggling.
Albanian national Alket Dauti, 31, was detained at his home address in Penge, this morning, 20 June.
Dauti will now appear before Westminster Magistrates at an extradition hearing, which could result in his extradition to Belgium to face people smuggling charges. Ten other people have already been arrested in connection with the same investigation in Belgium, France and Spain. He has not yet been charged with any crime.
The arrest was part of a joint UK-Belgian investigation into a ring alleged to be using lorries to smuggle men, women and children into the UK.
It is claimed that over the course of more than a month, several trucks picked up migrants in Belgium and transport them to the UK via the Channel ports. Some attempts were thwarted when the NCA passed intelligence to Border Force, who intercepted the migrants on arrival in the UK.
