A family whose young son passed away following a shock cancer diagnosis are calling on locals to back a campaign to support the charity that helped them through it all.
In the build up to World Cancer Day on Sunday, February 4, the family of Steven Hughes are sharing their story to encourage locals to raise vital funds and awareness for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people.
Tammy Jane Rhodes, from Brixton, had her world turned upside down when her son was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma aged just 20.
Tammy Jane said: “We were in a state of shock when Steven was diagnosed in February 2017 following a mass being found in his chest. He was given six rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy but unfortunately the cancer was too aggressive and he became unresponsive to treatment. Steven sadly passed away on September 20 the same year.”
During this difficult time, the family were supported by a CLIC Sargent social worker who provides practical, emotional and financial support.
Tammy Jane said: “Throughout Steven’s illness, CLIC Sargent was there for him and our family and still is. They made it possible for the family to share some great experiences, such as going to an Arsenal game and for us all to have one last holiday together.
“We are not sure how we would have got through it without their support. Our social worker was always there to talk to and they did everything they could to make Steven comfortable.”
Now the family are keen to give something back by supporting the World Cancer Day campaign and the charity so close to their hearts. As part of the World Cancer Day campaign, supporters can donate £2 to get their Bands Against Cancer wristband available in three collectable colours.
“I’m really proud to wear my Band Against Cancer wristband because CLIC Sargent made such a difference to me and my family. Buying a band and shouting about this campaign is such an easy way to make sure you can help other families. I hope everyone in Brixton gets behind this.”
