Police Officer receives a written warning for using unreasonable force on a suspect

A policeman has received an official warning from his bosses for using unreasonable force to detain a suspect.

A hearing was held for Glen Cheal, based at South West BCU, to answer allegations that he breached standards of professional behaviour in respect of discreditable conduct, authority, courtesy and respect, orders and instructions, use of force, duties and responsibilities and honesty and integrity.

On June 6, 2014 PC Cheal was on duty assigned as a vehicle operation in a marked police car.

He was in the company of another officer. Around 1.10am they were assigned to a reported incident in Veronica Road, Tooting Bec.

On arrival, PC Cheal was involved in the detention and arrest of a member of the public.

During that detention and arrest, PC Cheal used force which was unnecessary, unreasonable and disproportionate.

The hearing concluded on Friday.

It concluded that having carefully considered all the evidence the use of force was found proven at misconduct only and the officer received a written warning.

None of the other allegations were found proven.
