Police warn lone women: Beware walking alone in Merton and Wandsworth

Women should beware walking alone in Merton and Wandsworth, police have warned.

Officers are urging women to only use minicabs that they have specifically booked when travelling home alone following three incidents.

Detectives are investigating reported incidents involving a possible minicab driver in the areas of Clapham and Putneywho approaches lone females late at night.

When the victim is in the vehicle, the driver stops the car and assaults her. The incidents, which may be linked, took place in

  • Battersea Rise at 1.55am on Saturday, August 3
  • Putney High Street on Sunday, August 11 at 12.10am and;
  • Putney High Street on Sunday, August 18 at 2.47am.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have encountered the suspect.

Detective Inspector Joanne Flynn, of the South West Command Unit’s CID, said: “We are following a number of leads but, it is important women are aware that this predatory man is out there.

“Although none of the victims sustained serious injuries, they were, understandably, traumatised by the incidents.

The vehicle may or may not be a genuine minicab.

Please ensure you only get into cabs you have personally booked – don’t travel home alone.”
