Police watchdog appeals for witnesses after man restrained by cops dies

A police watchdog is appealing for witnesses after a man died in hospital more than two weeks after being restrained by police.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the incident which took place in Borough High Street, near Borough Market, shortly after midnight on January 25.

Police responded to a report of a man causing a disturbance at around 12.55am.

They found Adam Tidman, 34, being restrained by security staff at Belushi’s restaurant. Officers continued to restrain him outside the entrance to the restaurant.

While he was being restrained, Mr Tidman became unwell and was taken to hospital by paramedics. He died in hospital on February 11.

IOPC director Amanda Rowe said: “We would like to pass on our thoughts to Mr Tidman’s family and all of those affected by this incident.

“It’s possible that a number of bystanders may have witnessed him being restrained in Borough High Street or the events that led up to it.

“It’s vitally important that we establish the full circumstances leading up to the man’s death and therefore we’re appealing to anyone who saw what happened to contact our investigators to help us to establish all of the circumstances surrounding his death.”

The Met police notified the IOPC of the incident on January 25.

As part of its investigation, the watchdog has collected police body worn footage, CCTV, and initial accounts from the officers involved, who are currently being treated as witnesses, the IOPC said.

An inquest will be opened in due course.

If you witnessed the incident, please contact the IOPC by emailing BoroughHighStreet@policeconduct.gov.uk or calling 0300 303 5592.

A spokeswoman for the Met said: “We are aware of this investigation by the IOPC.

“It is important for public confidence that the details of this incident which tragically led to the death of Adam Tidman are thoroughly investigated. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends.”
