Project to make Walworth cleaner and greener gets £1m boost

Town hall chiefs have matched a grant from the Mayor of London to plough £1million into improving air quality in Walworth

Southwark Council is building on its extensive program of air quality initiatives, with the announcement of a new Walworth Low Emission Neighbourhood.

The council has secured a £500,000 air quality grant from the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund and it will match fund this, resulting in £1million for projects designed to help reduce air pollution.

The aim is to make living and passing through the new Walworth Low Emission Neighbourhood, a greener, cleaner and safer experience.

The council will consult on possible changes to the streetscape, aimed at opening up the roads for those who live on them. Proposals will also look at reducing rat-runs through residential areas, improving the flow of buses and encouraging people to walk, cycle and take public transport even more.

The council will work together with local communities, schools and businesses, with the aim of making public space in the new Walworth Low Emission Neighbourhood greener and creating more space for the community to enjoy.

The ultimate goal is to improve air quality, promote sustainable living and help to highlight some of the abundant history of the Walworth area.
