Public helps to decorate Peckham care home for Christmas

Santa might have to make fleeting socially distanced visits this year, but people have been lingering in at least one home to decorate their Christmas tree.

Residents and carers at a Peckham care home have thanked members of the public for helping to decorate the care home’s Christmas tree.

The care team from Anchor’s Greenhive care home in Bayards Road put up the tree in front of their entrance and invited members of the public to help decorate it to kick-start the Christmas festivities – to ensure residents could still have some community interaction while ensuring everyone remained safe.

The tree was lit on December 3. The tree will stay up through the entirety of the Christmas period. Members of the public who took part were thanked by the care team and were given a “goodie bag” for their time.

Irene Guppy,83, who has lived in Greenhive since August this year, said how much she enjoyed seeing the Christmas tree go up and seeing the kind members of the public decorate it.

She said: “It was lovely to see the lights come on and the tree looks absolutely beautiful. It’s a shame we haven’t been able to celebrate Christmas in the usual way, but it was still very nice to see everyone coming over to help decorate our tree with the decorations we made.

“Christmas is one of my favourite times of year and to get a chance to do something for it even during such a challenging time was really special for me.”
