Renovating ball courts to tackle inequality
By Sophia Shade
A council has teamed up with the Football Foundation to refurbish local courts and tackle inequality in sport across the borough.
Home to more than 50 courts, Greenwich has the capability of acting as a hub for basketball, football, and netball players alike.
The council is looking to transform their ball courts into inclusive ‘Play Zones’, to help residents stay active.
While the following five courts have been identified as most suitable for refurbishment: Abbey Wood Park, Altash Gardens, Briset Park, Hawksmoor, and Kidbrooke Green Park, the council is also welcoming recommendations.
The upgrades would include three general improvements, providing floodlights to enable year-round use, bookable sessions to allow for organised sport, and PIN codes for both free time and booked sessions.
But, these are only a handful of the improvements the council is willing to implement. The local authority wants to hear from residents about what facilities they would like to be included.
