Residents ‘saddened’ by another tragic death in Croydon after 20-year-old stabbed on railway bridge

Residents living near the scene of a fatal stabbing that took place yesterday afternoon have expressed their concern about violence in the borough.

A murder investigation has been launched after a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death on a railway bridge between Sandfield Road and Malfort Road in Thornton Heath.

This comes just weeks after another 20-year-old man was stabbed to death in Pawsons Road, Thornton Heath on May 24.

One woman, who lives near the crime scene and did not want to be named, said: “Yet another. There’s just so many stabbings in Croydon. Young people need more support.”

Another resident described the incident as “tragic” and “saddening”.

A policeman at the crime scene said the victim was of Turkish descent.

Both ends of the bridge and the surrounding residential area have been cordoned off with police tape.

Flowers have been laid against a nearby wall as a tribute to the young man, who died in the early hours of this morning.

A man who lives near the bridge described the moment police arrived. He said: “Suddenly out of my window I could see there were so many police cars. Like a swarm.”

At around 4.15pm officers on patrol in Thornton Heath were made aware of a man who had been injured at the junction of Melfort Road and Sandfield Road.

The man was found with stab injuries. Officers performed CPR and requested support from the London Ambulance Service.

He was taken to hospital but sadly died there in the early hours of this morning.

A statement from the Met said: “His next of kin have been informed and formal identification awaits.

“A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course. There have been no arrests and enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

  • It’s Melfort Road not Malfort Road.
