Residents ‘shocked’ after ‘brutal’ stabbing left young man to die in the street

Residents have been left “shocked” after a 21-year-old man was fatally stabbed and left to die in the street on Thursday night.

Robert Robinson was stabbed to death in Carteret Way, Deptford, at around 10.30pm. He died at the scene.

The Met said Mr Robinson’s family, who live locally, have been informed.

Two men were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of murder.

Dalziell Wedderburn, 44, was charged with murder yesterday and will appear in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court today.

The other man, who is aged 50, has been bailed to a date in early September.

Detective Inspector Neil Tovey, leading the investigation, called Mr Robinson’s death a “horrific crime”.

A post-mortem examination on Saturday found the cause of death as “multiple incised wounds”.

At the scene on Friday, forensics officers scoured the quiet residential road and surrounding front gardens which had been cordoned off with police tape.

A car with its front windscreen smashed at the end of Carteret Way, in front of the Pepys Estate, was being inspected by officers. Police said they did not know if this was related to the incident.

The crime scene stood on the border of a huge redevelopment.

Saurabh Arora, 25, who lives in a neighbouring new build which is part of the redevelopment, said: “It’s really shocking because this is such a safe area.

“I’ve been here for three years and nothing like this has happened.”

Another resident of the redevelopment, Himanshu Sharma, 36, said: “I moved here a year ago and the only problems we have are petty thefts, people stealing mobile phones and things like that.

“This is something new, it doesn’t happen here.”

But residents who lived outside of the redevelopment said violence and crime were frequent issues in the neighbourhood.

DI Tovey said: “This is a horrific crime committed by persons who chose to arm themselves with weapons and blight our communities.

“A young man has died in brutal circumstances and his family are grieving.

“The incident took place on a residential street at a time when many people are likely to have been at home.

“I believe the local community hold the key to solving this crime, and any information may assist us in obtaining justice for Robert’s family.

“If you captured any footage of the attack or the precursor events, we have opened an online portal where you can upload videos or images – and this can be completed anonymously if you wish.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or ‘X’ @MetCC and quote CAD8733/6June.
