Residents to be asked whether their homes should be knocked down

By Tara O’Connor, Local Democracy Reporter

Residents in crumbling homes on Croydon’s Regina Road estate will vote on whether they should be demolished this spring.

It comes two years after shocking conditions, including huge leaks and mouldy flats, were exposed on the South Norwood estate.

Croydon council wants to demolish the estate, which includes three tower blocks and lower-rise flats and houses which were built in the 1960s.

In April and May, a ballot will ask residents whether they are in favour of the buildings getting demolished.

Regina Road residents living in the affected area should soon receive information from the council to explain what the decision would mean for them.

The ballot will be run by an independent body.

Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry, said: “Regina Road residents have faced unacceptable disrepair and housing conditions and it is only right that they remain at the centre of any decisions made about the future of their estate.

“I look forward to continuing to work with tenants and leaseholders as together we determine the future of their estate and their homes.”
