Revealed: Greenwich’s parking fines hotspots

Greenwich council has revealed the top locations in the borough where drivers were issued parking fines last year, with the authority expected to bring in more than £6million this year from the offences.
Council documents for a scrutiny meeting for Greenwich council on May 7 show the top locations in the borough for parking fines issued in the past year and the junction of Woolwich Road and Charlton Lane topped the list with 6,108 drivers being fined for stopping in the bus lane.
The yellow box junction in Plumstead Common Road came in second on the list, with 4,904 fines, while the bus lane outside Dyson House in Blackwall Lane followed with 4,793.
The fourth and fifth spots were taken by the box junction in Peartree Way and the bus lane outside the Makro store in Bugsby’s Way, with 4,509 and 4,210 motorists being fined respectively.
The authority revealed that it had issued 106,586 parking fines between April 2023 and the end of January this year. Officers added that the council expected to reach 140,000 by the end of the financial year in April.
The projected figure is more than double the amount seen in the 2020/21 financial year, when 58,839 fines were issued. Council officers said in their report that the expansion of CCTV networks had increased the number of fines given out, with nearly 60 per cent of fines currently being issued via CCTV.
The revenue expected to be generated from parking fines for the 2023/24 financial year was £6.47m. Approximately £3.8m of the figure was forecasted to come from CCTV footage, but officers acknowledged less income may be generated due to fewer offences being committed since the introduction of the ULEZ expansion in August last year.
