Sadiq Khan elected London Mayor for unprecedented third term

Sadiq Khan was elected mayor of London on Saturday, winning a historic third term after a dramatic contest.

Mr Khan was declared the winner over the Conservative candidate, Susan Hall, with 43.8 per cent of the vote.

According to London Elects, which manages the mayoral and London assembly elections, voter turnout was 1.5 per cent down compared to 2021, at 40.5 per cent.

Bexley and Bromley, led by the Conservatives, had the highest constituency turnout, with 48 per cent.

Speaking at his Declaration of Office, the Mayor said he was committed to improving the lives of young Londoners, climate action and creating opportunity across the capital.

He said: “The cost-of-living crisis means Londoners are being priced out of our city. Some are struggling desperately to make ends meet and others can’t afford childcare or are delaying starting a family.

“It’s against this difficult backdrop that the odds today are increasingly stacked against a bus driver’s son, or a nurse’s daughter. But I’m not prepared to simply throw in the towel and give up on the prospects of young Londoners.

“We need to give the next generation a chance. So we’ll harness the energy, imagination and insights of young Londoners to design positive programmes that work for them.”
