School crowned double champions at football tournament final

Pupils and staff from a junior school celebrated the success of both their boys’ and girls’ teams in a trust-wide football competition earlier this month.

Both teams, made up of Year 5 and 6 pupils from Burnt Oak Junior School in Burnt Oak Lane, Sidcup – part of The Pioneer Academy trust – defeated 15 other schools to be crowned champions at the final on March 15.

Romie, a pupil from Burnt Oak Junior School, said: “I was proud to be the girls’ football team captain. I even slept with the trophy next to me that night.”

Schools from the Trust’s four regions, Bromley, Bexley, Croydon and Kent, held their own competition back in the autumn term to select their regional representative for the finals.

Ian McManus, executive headteacher at Burnt Oak Junior School, said: “I am very proud of both our teams and it has been wonderful to see the children celebrating their brilliant success together.

“Tournaments like these are so important, helping all those involved to develop their teamwork skills and building positive relationships as well as confidence.”
