School evacuated and children sent home after gas leak in Wimbledon

Children have been evacuated from their school in Wimbledon, after a gas leak was reported this morning.

Harris Academy Wimbledon, in High Path, Wimbledon, confirmed in a statement on its website that children were being sent home due to the incident.

Students who cannot get home will be taken to Harris Academy Morden, in Hardy Road, Morden, where families will be contacted.

The school’s statement said the gas leak originated from a block of flats in Pincott Road, South Wimbledon, across the road from the school.

Residents were evacuated from the flats as a precaution but have since been allowed to return.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has since announced that no elevated gas readings were detected in the area.

Police, ambulance, and fire services were at the scene in High Path along with the surrounding roads were cordoned off to the public.

A spokesman from the LFB said: “Firefighters from Wimbledon and surrounding fire stations responded to reports of a gas leak in a residential block on Pincott Road, South Wimbledon.

“Crews attended the scene alongside the Metropolitan Police Service and local gas authority.

“Crews evacuated residents from the block and immediate area as a precaution, but following further investigation no elevated readings were detected. As a result, residents were allowed to return to the building.
“The Brigade was first called about the incident at 8am and remained on scene until around 10.30am.”
