Shed fire contained after alarming spread to neighbouring gardens

One shed and ten metres of garden fencing were completely destroyed by a fire in Abbey Wood last night.

Half of a metal shed and a small part of a timber shed were also damaged by the blaze in neighbouring gardens, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to tackle the fire in Basildon Road, which was thought to have been caused by accident.

Sub Officer Anna Snelson, who was at the scene, said: “On arrival it was a very visible fire with flames coming from high above the shed. There were 27 calls made to our 999 control centre to alert the Brigade about the fire.”

The Brigade was called at 11.30pm and the incident was under control 70 minutes later. Fire crews from Plumstead, Erith and Bexley fire stations were in attendance.
