Six deaths and rise in patients with coronavirus at St George’s Hospital in Tooting

Six people have died after having tested positive for coronavirus at St George’s Hospital in Tooting in the past two weeks.

Data from NHS England shows four patients had died at the trust between October 24 and October 26, while another two died between October 16 and October 18.

This brings the total number of patients who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 at the hospital since March to 306.

A statement on the Trust’s website said: “Our thoughts are with the families of the patients affected – and, in all cases, we would ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”

As of Tuesday, eight other coronavirus patients were being cared for in intensive care.

A further 31 Covid-19 positive patients were being cared for on the wards.

This is a big rise from the previous week, when there were fewer than five positive patients being cared for in intensive care and only nine patients being cared for on hospital wards.

However, a spokeswoman for St George’s Hospital said the hospital was “well-equipped” to manage an increase in Covid-19 cases, both on wards and in intensive care.

She said: “Our message to the public would be to stay vigilant, follow the guidance, but also – crucially – to continue accessing hospital services when they need to.

“Like all hospitals, we have put a range of measures in place to keep people safe.”
