South-east London makes its mark on The Sunday Times best places to live
Seventy-two neighbourhoods across the UK have been featured in a comprehensive guide of the best places to live, published by the Sunday Times.
Two locations in South-east London, East Dulwich and Telegraph Hill, made it onto the list after being selected by judges.
Saffron Walden in Essex grabbed the top spot as the best to live in the UK, and Walthamstow was named the best in London. Apart from the winners, the locations are not ranked.
Judges praised Telegraph Hill as an “urban hamlet” for its tranquil conservation area, bustling community venues and dog friendly parks overlooking the city.
East Dulwich made its way onto the list for its “deep rooted” community spirit, Victorian and Edwardian terraces, as well as its up-market neighbour Dulwich Village.
Helen Davies, editorial projects director and Best Places to Live editor, said: “It is easy to feel overwhelmed by everything going on in the world, but there really is so much to celebrate closer to home, from small gestures that lift the everyday from verges blooming with daffodils to volunteer-run dementia cafés, to new initiatives from repair cafés to new railway stations.”
The Sunday Times’s expert judges have visited all the locations and assessed factors from schools to transport, broadband speeds and mobile signal to culture, as well as access to green spaces and the health of the high street.
