South London MPs respond to Donald Trump’s US election victory

Members of Parliament in South London said they are “saddened” and “concerned” after it was announced this morning that Donald Trump claimed victory in the US election.

The Republican swept to victory after defeating Democrat opponent Kamala Harris in the swing states of North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

In response to the result, Labour MP for Vauxhall and Camberwell Green, Florence Eshalomi, said: “While the results of democratic elections must always be respected by the UK, Donald Trump’s victory will be a worrying moment for some of my constituents.

“I share their concerns that this outcome might embolden voices who seek to divide people rather than bring us together.

“I am proud to represent a community that celebrates diversity as our greatest strength.

“I will continue to be a strong voice for these values for as long as I have the privilege of representing Vauxhall and Camberwell Green in Parliament.”

MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Neil Coyle, echoed MP Eshalomi’s concerns, saying he was “saddened” by Mr Trump’s return and “what it means for the US”.

He said: “His re-emergence will please Putin but scare anyone interested in Ukraine and European peace.”

One of Mr Trump’s main campaign pledges was to impose tariffs on imports. While China is likely to face the brunt of the potential tariff policy, Mr Trump has also proposed a 10 per cent flat tax on all imports to the US.

The US is the UK’s largest export market, with 25 per cent of all manufactured UK exports sent to the US in 2023.

Mr Coyle said: “Trump has advocated trade war policies which will cause global economic damage, including in the UK.

“We have a needlessly turbulent time ahead.”
