Southwark general election results 2024: Labour secure all five constituencies
For the first time in a general election, five different constituencies overlap with Southwark, up from three after boundary changes.
The five constituencies, Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Peckham, Dulwich and West Norwood, Faraday and Rye Lane have all been secured by Labour.
Neil Coyle retained Bermondsey and Old Southwark for Labour, with 16,857 votes – beating his Lib Dem rival Rachel Bentley, who finished second with 9,070 votes.
The win comes despite an exit poll which gave the Liberal Democrat opposition a 48 per cent chance of taking the seat.
The turnout in Bermondsey and Old Southwark was 54.34 per cent, significantly lower than the 62.9 per cent in 2019.
Labour has also held Peckham, after Miatta Fahnbulleh saw off rivals to retain the seat.
The seat was re-established for the 2024 general election and is made up mainly from the abolished Camberwell and Peckham constituency.
Fahnbulleh has taken over from former Labour MP Harriet Harman – the local MP since 1982 – after securing 22,813 votes in the safe Labour seat.
Only 54.11 per cent of Peckham’s 72,123 registered voters turned out to vote yesterday.
A resounding victory for Labour came in Dulwich and West Norwood after Helen Hayes received 27,356 votes – 60.3 per cent of the overall share.
The constituency is considered a safe Labour seat, with the party standing successful candidates since it was created in 1997.
The Green Party, represented by Pete Elliot, finished second, receiving 8,567 votes, equivalent to 18.9 per cent.
Speaking after her victory in the early hours this morning, Hayes said: “I would like to thank every single person in Dulwich and West Norwood for voting to return me as the member of parliament for this extraordinary constituency.”
Southwark Labour has also held on to a further two council seats after the results of two by-elections were announced.
Mohamed Habib Deen was announced as councillor for Faraday and David Parton for Rye Lane, on Friday, July 5.
The by-elections were triggered after Chloe Tomlinson and Kimberly McIntosh announced their resignations in May.
In Faraday, Mohamed Habib Dean took 2,201 votes. In Rye Lane, David Parton received 3,349 votes.
