Hero attempted rescue of woman who fell into Thames but then drowned himself

A hero passerby who jumped in to the River Thames to help a woman who had fallen off London Bridge has died, City of London Police have confirmed.

The man bravely jumped into the river shortly after midnight on Saturday April 24 after seeing a woman fall from London Bridge.

A second man also jumped into the Thames and the pair tried to save the woman.

City of London police, ambulance services and the coastguard were called to the scene to try to help all three people in the water.

The woman and one of the men who jumped in after her were rescued – but the rescue services were unable to locate the second man.

A City of London Police spokesperson said the body of a missing man, believed to be one of the attempted rescuers, was discovered in the river at around 6am the same morning.

His next of kin have been made aware of the man’s tragic death and are being supported by specially trained officers.

A City of London Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.12am on Saturday, April 24 to reports of a woman in the River Thames close to London Bridge.

“Two men, who had witnessed the woman fall from the bridge, entered the river to try and save her.

“At 6am the same morning, a body was found believed to be that of the missing man.”

The identity of the man has not been released.

According to the River Temperature: River Thames above Shiplake Lock tracker, the temperature of the Thames fell to around 4C just after midnight.

Swimming in the Thames is considered dangerous due to sewage, tides, currents and water traffic.

    In Postman’s Park, there are memorials to many brave people, many who died in an attempt to save others, as did Jimi .
    Why not put a plaque there, so Jimi is never forgotten?
