Southwark’s leisure centres get £2m makeover in time for the New Year

Southwark council has completed a £2million refurbishment of its leisure centres, just in time for the new year. 

The cash injection has funded upgrades, new equipment and improved spaces at the Castle Leisure Centre, Southwark Park Sports and Athletics Centre, Camberwell Leisure Centre, Surrey Docks Fitness and Watersports Centre, Peckham Pulse and Dulwich Leisure Centre.

The BOX 12 fitness experience has also launched, offering a full-body workout, which combines boxing and functional fitness in 12, three-minute rounds. 

These new studios can be found at Camberwell, Dulwich and the Castle leisure centres, as well as at Peckham Pulse.

Councillor Portia Mwangangye, cabinet member for leisure, parks and young people, said: “These upgraded leisure centres offer our residents the ultimate facilities to stay active and healthy as we kick-off the new year.

“With revamped gyms and exciting, innovative features like Box 12, we’re making sure everyone—from first-timers to fitness pros—can find something they love.”

Southwark council is also preparing for the opening of the Canada Water Leisure Centre in the spring.

The facility will feature Southwark’s largest swimming pool, exercise studios and cutting-edge sports courts. 

This leisure centre will replace the much-loved Seven Islands Leisure Centre, and will offer even more opportunities for health, fitness, and community connection. 

Cllr Mwangangye said: “Looking ahead, the opening of the Canada Water Leisure Centre in 2025 will be a game-changer for Southwark. 

“This investment highlights our passion and commitment to ensuring health and wellbeing are within everyone’s reach in Southwark.”
