Sutton’s parks among the very best – and has a flag to prove it

It’s official: Eleven of Sutton’s Parks are among Britain’s best looked after and maintained.

The Parks have been granted a coveted Green Flag Award – confirming them as among the best managed green spaces in the country.

This years list of winners has been joined for the very first time by Sutton Common Park.

It is a scheme that rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, with judging based on extensive criteria including environmental management, biodiversity, landscape and heritage and community involvement – in this case provided by the Friends of Sutton Common Park (FoSCP).

Ray Leyden, chairman for FoSCP, said, “ It was a team effort by Sutton Parks department, our local ward councillors Rob Beck and Cumar Sahathevan, as well as the Friends Group.

“With the Award we are also granted a “Green Flag” that we can fly and show off with our newly won status and bring much pride to our local community.”

In the park for the green flag hoisting, on Friday, were Dave Morgan, FoSPC, Stephen Jarvis, vice-chairman of FoSPC. Ray Leyden, chairman of FoSPC and Sarah Fowler, parks contracts officer for LB Sutton.
