Taking it all in his stride for ActionAid – marathon man Martin
Dedicated Martin Carr’s long-standing support for the international charity ActionAid UK will carry him into his 11th London Marathon next month to raise funds for the charity.
The 47-year-old church administrator from Croydon ran his first London Marathon for ActionAid in 2013, and was also even committed enough to take part in a virtual run during the pandemic.
He has run for the charity every year since and now has 10 consecutive London races under his belt, raising nearly £30,000 to help the charity in its fight for a world free of gender-based violence and poverty.
Speaking about his affiliation with the charity, Martin said: “I’m totally committed to international development – ActionAid’s work with women and girls inspires towards a world where all can live without poverty.
“Rights and support for women and girls should be non-negotiable – everyone, whatever race, gender or sexuality, is equal. I will continue to fight for a world in which no one is held back by poverty or prejudice from being able to live life to the full.”
The ActionAid UK Events team said: “It’s such a pleasure to have Martin join our London Marathon team every year. We’ve grown very fond of him. He’s a true advocate for women and girls’ rights and we’re so grateful for his ongoing support.
“We can’t wait to give him and the rest of our London Marathon team a big cheer this coming race day, and we hope Martin will continue to run for ActionAid in the future.”
Martin shared some tips for anyone thinking of running a marathon. “You’re not going to break a world record, or come first, so relax, train regularly and start early,” he said. “But if life gets in the way of doing every long run, don’t worry, you can walk the last bit if needed.”
On race day, Martin keeps focused and energised knowing that his biggest supporters – his parents and husband James will be cheering him on from the sidelines, they have never missed a race.
