Teenager charged after man killed in hit-and-run

Police have charged a man following a hit-and-run that killed a 27-year-old man.

Wahab Zahid, 19, of St Mark’s Place, Dagenham, was arrested on Thursday.

He was charged on Friday with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. 

Zahid appeared in custody at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and will next appear at the Old Bailey on a date to be confirmed.

Police were called at around 2.45am on July 9 following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Clapham High Street, Clapham.

The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene. 

Officers attended, alongside the London Fire Brigade and medics from the London Ambulance Service.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity has not been released but his next of kin have been informed.

Police have asked anyone with information about this incident to call on 101 and quote reference CAD 1040/09Jul.
