The best place in South London to see cherry blossom trees

Now that the clocks have changed it feels like spring is finally here, which means trees coming into blossom should be happening anytime soon.

New research shows that Lewisham has the third highest density of cherry blossoms out of all London boroughs.

The data was analysed by Japanese snack brand Kelly Loves, using official government data from the Greater London Authority.

Compared to the London Average of 63 cherry blossom trees per square mile, Lewisham had a total of 255, just after Redbridge and Barnet.

Southwark and Greenwich also came in the top five, with 237 and 144 cherry blossoms per square miles.

Kelly Loves analysed the data ahead of Hanami, a traditional Japanese custom that translates to ‘flower watching’.

During the Hanami season in Japan, people sit beneath the blossom trees to eat, drink and socialise. Families, friends and colleagues all gather together to celebrate the beauty of the seasonal trees.

Kelly Choi, founder of Kelly Loves, said: “You’ll have seen the avenues of cherry blossom trees in photos of Japan as cherry blossom season is one of the most popular tourist attractions.

“There are thought to be more than 32,000 Japanese residents living in Greater London.

“This data enables the Japanese community living in the city to embrace the traditions of Hanami closer to home, as well as those living in London who appreciate spring and what it has to offer.

“We are encouraging residents in London to find beautiful spots in the boroughs with the largest density of cherry blossoms to spend quality time with their friends and family while admiring the environment around them”.
