Three men dead and one in life-threatening condition after horror house fire in Croydon

Three men have died and one remains in a life-threatening condition after a fire ripped through a house in Croydon on Friday night.

Officers were called by the London fire brigade (LFB) at around 10.50pm to the fire at a house in Sanderstead Road, South Croydon

Three men were rescued from the house by firefighters and treated by ambulance crews. Two men – one believed to be aged in his 40s – were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he died on Saturday afternoon.

Officers are working to confirm the identity of the three men and inform their families.

Two other men took themselves hospital after the incident. One of the men, aged in his 30s, remains in a life-threatening condition. 

The fifth man has been discharged from hospital.

All five men are believed to be Polish nationals, the LFB said.

Six fire engines and about 40 firefighters from Croydon, Purley, Woodside, Norbury and Wallington fire stations attended the scene.

Most of the ground floor of a two-storey end-of-terraced house was damaged by fire. 

Police and the LFB are investigating the cause of the fire.

Chief Inspector Imran Asghar said: “This is an extremely sad incident, which has led to the deaths of three men, while a fourth man remains in hospital in a critical condition.

“My colleagues have made significant progress towards confirming the identities of the men and providing support to their families. This process is ongoing. 

“Enquiries by specialist police and fire investigators are underway to establish the cause of the fire. 

“Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, ref 7129/29DEC23.”

A spokesman from the LFB said: “The Brigade was called at around 10.40pm and the fire was brought under control by around 12.15am.”
