Three men killed at Loughborough Junction rail station

Three men in their 20s were killed on a railway line in the early hours of this morning.

Shortly after 7.30am during this morning’s rush hour, officers from British Transport Police were called to Loughborough Junction after the driver of another train spotted the three bodies.

Police and paramedics found three people who were pronounced dead at the scene. Only one has so far been identified and their family informed

There were no reports of any passenger trains being involved. Police photographers were seen to be taking pictures of graffiti. Spray cans found nearby were among bags full of items removed by forensics officers.

Passenger services on that line begin about 6am but there are freight trains travelling along the route all night. The station is on an aqueduct so there are only low walls, less than three feet high, alongside the tracks.

Enquiries are also underway to establish the circumstances of how the people came to be on the tracks.

Supt Matt Allingham, from British Transport Police (BTP), said their injuries are “consistent with having being hit by a train”. He said police were “aware that there are a number of speculative comments about this on social media”

He added: “It is too early for us to comment on their reasons for being on the track. The bodies were discovered by a train driver.

“We know that they were dead for a while before we turned up.

“It was a possibility that it was during the hours of darkness – that’s why it wasn’t reported early on.

“There’s not a safe refuge up there, so if they were up there, there is nowhere for them to go.

“If they are caught up there in that section of track with a train coming through, they really wouldn’t have much option.

“We are still trying to identify the train that hit the individuals.”

Supt Allingham said officers “have delivered the sad news to one family”, and are working to identify and locate the next of kin for the other two men.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “My heart goes out to the families of the three people killed at Loughborough Junction station this morning.

“We are in close contact with the British Transport Police who are urgently investigating this incident.”

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of these three people.

“At this time, we are treating their death as unexplained as we make a number of immediate enquiries. I would ask anyone who was near to Loughborough Junction this morning, and saw something which they think might be relevant, please contact us as soon as possible.”

Train services were delayed whilst these enquiries were made . Network Rail said: “We are assisting the British Transport Police as they investigate an incident at Loughborough Junction this morning.”
