Three people rescued as another jumps from window to escape burning building
Six people escaped from a three floor building after a ground-floor flat went up in flames in the early hours this morning.
Ten fire engines and about 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in Aldrington Road, Streatham Park.
A ground-floor flat, in a semi-detached property was destroyed in the blaze, the London fire brigade (LFB) said.
Firefighters used a 13.5metre ladder to rescue three people trapped on the second floor. All three were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service crews.
Two other people, who escaped the building before the LFB arrived, were also treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
A sixth resident escaped by jumping from a first floor window. They were taken to hospital by paramedics due to ankle injuries sustained during their escape.
The brigade was called to the fire at around 1.40am and firefighters had the incident under control by around 3am.
Crews from Tooting, West Norwood, Norbury and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the LFB and the Met police.
Speaking after the fire, Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “This was a complex incident, involving a property that had been converted into a number of separate flats across three floors.
“Firefighters worked hard to bring the incident under control, and in the process rescued three people who were trapped in a second floor flat by the fire.
“The LFB’s specialist fire investigators will now support our policing colleagues as we work to determine the cause of the fire.”
