Three women hospitalised after Deptford house fire

Three women were hospitalised after a fire ripped through a semi-detached house on Wednesday morning.

About 25 firefighters tackled the blaze at the property in Grove Street, Deptford.

One woman managed to escape the building before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Two other women were rescued from the building by firefighters and taken to hospital.

One of the LFB’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene to help fight the fire from above.

Most of the first floor was damaged by the fire.

The LFB received eight calls to the incident, with the first coming in at around 8am.

Crews from Deptford, Greenwich, New Cross and Dockhead brought the fire under control by around 10am.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

A LFB spokesman said: “If you smoke it’s vitally important you stub it out right out, preferably in an ashtray.

“Always ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire.”
