Two tall thin towers have shot up near East Croydon Station in the past few months.

It is the latest development in the town centre and will see more than 450 new flats built.

The Morello Estate, two 25-storey towers, will be provide 338 flats while an adjacent nine-storey building, known as Cherry Orchard Gardens, will provide 118 flats for shared ownership and social rent.

It also includes 18,000 sq ft of retail space and a new bridge which will link Addiscombe to East Croydon Station.

The new flats are the second phase of the the £350 million Morello development, which has already built 300 flats near the station.

Morello 2, as it is known, was originally planned to be a 56-storey tower but this was changed to be a pair of towers with a series of lower blocks.

The current slim tall towers are known as the “cores” for the blocks and panels looking like brickwork are built off site then installed.

The cores are expected to be completed this month, then two cranes will be installed on top of the towers so the external work can start.

This month large safety screens will be installed on the structure to protect people working on the railway and nearby properties.

Craig Marks, CEO of Menta said: “Having delivered a first phase of 300 new homes on the adjacent site this further development with a blue chip set of partners will result in a total of around 750 new homes, infrastructure and valuable amenity space as its contribution to the East Croydon Masterplan, and the long awaited new station entrance where residents will be able to travel the 11 miles into central London in less than 20 minutes.”
