University campus locked down after four attacked with ‘unknown substance’
A university campus was locked down after four people were “sprayed with an unknown substance” in the early hours yesterday morning.
Police arrived at University of Greenwich’s Avery Hill campus shortly after midnight following reports that a man had been attacked and sprayed with an unknown substance.
One man was treated for head injuries by London Ambulance Service crews, before being taken to hospital.
Whilst at the scene, officers found three other people who had also been sprayed with the substance. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing, police said.
The university temporarily locked down the campus, but has confirmed it has since been reopened.
A spokeswoman from University of Greenwich said: “We can confirm we are assisting the police following an incident at our Avery Hill campus. The entrance to the campus was closed briefly, but has now re-opened. We are grateful to our security team for its swift action.
“No University of Greenwich students were hurt.”
Tests carried out on the substance have found that it was non-toxic, police said. None of the victims suffered any life-changing or life-threatening injuries.
A crime scene remains in place at the scene.
A spokesman from the Met said: “At this early stage, there have been no arrests and urgent enquiries are on-going.
“If you saw, or have any information that may assist police then please call 101 stating CAD45/10DEC24.”
