Victim of fatal market stabbing named as man, 66, charged
A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder following the stabbing of three people at a busy market on Sunday morning.
Cops were called at 10.40am to reports of several people being seriously injured in East Street, Walworth.
Officers found three people at the scene suffering from serious injuries.
One man, 77-year-old Hilkiah McLeggan, from Southwark was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are aware and receiving support from specialist officers, the Met said.
Two other men were taken to hospital where they remain. One of them is in critical condition.
Musse Ali, 66, of no fixed address has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
He is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates Court today.
Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, lead for policing in Southwark, said: “This was a horrific incident where a man had lost his life and two other people received serious injuries.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene.
“Lastly we are aware of posts circulating on social media, implying that this was a terrorist incident. Our enquiries indicate this is not the case and we ask the public not to speculate.”
