Wanted: An artist to jazz up Wandsworth shopping centre with eye-catching mural

Southside Shopping Centre is searching for a local artist to create a community-inspired masterpiece and have their work displayed in the heart of Wandsworth.

The retail centre may have plenty going for it but mangers of the site want to transform the brickwork at the centre’s busy thoroughfare at their West Entrance into a vibrant, colourful and welcoming new street art display space.

The open call is supported by Southside’s owners Landsec and Invesco Real Estate, and the successful artist will receive a £17,000 budget to bring their vision to life.

They say the design should reflect a clear connection to the character and soul of the area.

Rebecca Ruddle, centre director at Southside Shopping Centre, in Wandsworth High Street, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the work of emerging artists in the borough and provide them with a canvas to showcase their talent and leave their mark in Wandsworth.

“Southside plays a key role at the heart of Wandsworth and truly reflects the local community in everything we do – which is why we’re searching for a local artist who can capture the essence of our community in their design.

“We’re looking for something that resonates with our residents and guests and brings joy and pride to all who encounter it.”

The closing date for artists to submit their expression of interest is midnight on April 29. Shortlisted artists will each receive ÂŁ700 to submit a proposed mock-up of their work with a detailed plan for implementation.

The successful artist will be announced on July 29, with the work expected to be installed in Autumn 2024.
