Westminster Abbey ‘protest’ lands two women in court

Two women will appear in court charged with criminal damage following an incident in Westminster Abbey yesterday.

Alyson Lee – 66, of Park Grove, Derby, and Diane Bligh – 77, of Langham Place, Frome, have been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with criminal damage. Lee will appear on February 11 and Bligh the following day.

The women were arrested after a substance, believed to be a powdered paint, was sprayed on the tombstone of evolutionary theorists Charles Darwin. They phrase ‘1.5 is dead’ was daubed – a reference to temperature rise limits set by the Paris Agreement of 10 years ago which have been breached.

The pair are allegedly part of the climate change movement Just Stop Oil.
