Westminster council to auction Abbey Road street sign

By Owen Sheppard, Local Democracy Reporter

Street signs of Abbey Road and other notable central London locations will be flogged at auction by Westminster Council.

More than 200 street signs will go under the hammer, including for Pimlico Road, Westbourne Park Road, Belgrave Place and Bateman Street in Soho.

The council revealed that some of the signs include typing errors and were never used, such as an erroneous “Dutchess Street” sign intended for Duchess Street in Marylebone.

The sales could net tens of thousands of pounds for the council.

According to Catherine Southon Auctioneers and Valuers, the Abbey Road sign could sell for up to £2,000, perhaps to an eager Beatles fan.

The council said it will give Londoners “a unique chance” to own a piece of the capital’s history.

Councillor Melvyn Caplan, deputy leader of the council, said: “Westminster is home to some of the most iconic street names and postcodes in the world, and this collection includes the historic Abbey Road. These are original signs which have been on the streets of London in recent years – through historic moments and cultural milestones.

“Interestingly, this particular collection includes a small number of street signs with typing errors, making them truly one of a kind and, hopefully, even more valuable for collectors and enthusiasts. All the money raised through the auction will be invested back into services for people in our city.”

Catherine Southon, who has appeared on Bargain Hunt, Flog it and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, said: “There are also a wide range of names that should appeal to individuals such as Charles Street and Alexander Street, both estimated at £80-120.

“Fifth Avenue W10 may appeal to the American market and is expected to fetch £80-120, while Cambridge Street SW1 could appeal to Royal fans [estimated to be worth £100-150].”
