Westminster homeless charity reaches milestone with 250th food drive
A homeless charity will stage its 250th food drive this Saturday, having set up every week for the past five years.
It gave out free ice-cream and haircuts as well as its usual evening meal to mark the landmark.
The charity, Who Is Hussain London, has now fed hundreds upon thousands of people, and also gave out hygiene kits to minimise the risk of spreading Covid-19.
Guests were also offered mental health support, as well as a friendly ear for those who needed it at its base in Charing Cross.
Who Is Hussain London has continued to work throughout lockdown to ensure its guests do not go hungry.
Organiser Mohamed Jawad Gulamhussein said: “It gives me great pride in knowing that we have been serving our guests for the past five years, every Saturday without fail.
“The consistency has really helped forge the relationship with our guests and has established a great level of trust and goodwill between us, which makes it all the more rewarding.
“Hosting the 250th food drive we’ve performed was a huge milestone, and we hope we can perform many more.
“Now that the lockdown measures have eased, everyone is rushing to the barbers to get a very long overdue haircut.
“Prices at the barbers are naturally going to increase because they have a business to run and the reduced footfall due to the sanitation measures that are required after each haircut.
“We, therefore, thought that it would be important to provide our guests with haircuts that may be otherwise out of reach, with the aim of assisting in the improvement of our guests’ well-being.”
