Young Lewisham murder victim named as Jay Hughes, 15, of Bellingham

Detectives investigating the murder of a 15-year-old boy in Lewisham have named the victim as Jay Hughes of Bellingham.

The officer leading the investigation has issued a renewed appeal for information and witnesses following the premeditated attack on the teenager, who was yards from his home when he was stabbed, with the wounds proving fatal three hours later.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Soole, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “At this early stage officers are working hard to establish the full circumstances. We know that this was an awful premeditated attack on a young boy who sadly lost his life as a result. I would appeal to anyone with information to get in touch with us. Those responsible must be caught and brought to justice. Any information passed to police will be treated with the strictest confidence.”

Officers were called at approximately 5.22pm on Thursday to reports of a stabbing in the street on Randlesdown Road, Bellingham.

Police attended along with colleagues from the London Ambulance Service.

A male, aged 15, was found with stab wounds at a time when he should usually have been on his way home from school. He was taken to a South London hospital. Sadly, despite the efforts of medical professionals he was pronounced dead at 8.15pm.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place at Greenwich mortuary on Sunday, 4 November.

A crime scene remains in place.
