Peckham shop fire prompts cigarette warning from fire chiefs
Firefighters have issued a smoking safety warning following a shop fire in Rye Lane, Peckham.
A small part of the rear of the shop and a yard containing mixed refuse were damaged by the blaze on Saturday afternoon.
The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, caused by a discarded cigarette.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “If you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.
“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but could also cost you your life.”
The brigade was called at 2.15pm and the fire was under control two hours later. Fire crews from Old Kent Road, New Cross and Brixton fire stations were in attendance.
