Shepherds Bush police station to make way for block of flats

Shepherds Bush Police Station is set to be bulldozed to make way for 50 flats after closing down.

A developer wants to build two housing blocks to replace the station in Uxbridge Road – one of London’s busiest routes.

Shepherds Bush police station was built in the 1960s and closed in late-2020.

The three-storey building, which included nine cells, was put up for sale by the Mayor of London’s office after a larger base for the Central West police unit opened at Hammersmith Police Station in September 2020.

Developer Telereal Trillium wants to build 54 “high quality” homes with shops underneath within two blocks on the site, a planning report says.

The flats have been designed by Formation Architects, with space for kids to play, a courtyard and bike storage.

The report said: “The scheme will endeavour to create a new, high quality development in a sustainable location, and will aim to enhance the quality of the local urban grain.”

It adds: “Telereal brings many years of experience in the UK property market to residential development. Offering a strong combination of proven expertise, capital resources and a commitment to delivering quality homes … As a new, mixed-use residential led redevelopment, the proposal responds very well, to the challenges of the currently vacant site.”

Keeping the police station building and converting it into flats would only create 15 homes, according to the developer.

If the plans are approved, the new flats would be terraced and built from red brick with balconies. The development site is a two-minute walk from Shepherds Bush Market Tube station and a 12-minute walk to Wood Lane Tube.

Shepherds Bush and six other stations in West London were earmarked for sale in 2012 by Boris Johnson while he was Mayor of London. Since 2015, a further 36 Met Police stations have closed.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council will decide whether the plans get the green light in due course.
