Sistermatic and Nite Dykez transforms Brixton Village’s Market Row into a street party

On February 17, Sistermatic and Nite Dykez will transform Brixton Village’s Market Row into a street party, marking Sistermatic’s return to the Brixton music scene for the first time in nearly three decades, in celebration of LGBTQ+ history month.

Sistermatic, pioneered by Eddie Lockhart and Yvonne Taylor, was the UK’s first lesbian Sound System and monthly queer women’s club night that ran out of South London Women’s Centre in Brixton, from 1986 to 1995.

It provided a space for black queer women to feel safe, celebrated, and party to good music.

Yvonne will be collaborating with GIN, co-founder of Nite Dykez – a monthly club night for LGBTQ+ women.

For one night only, Sistermatic will be taking over the walkways of Brixton Village’s Market Row and transforming the space into a street party.

The soundtrack for the evening will be led by Sistermatic’s Shineeye as well as GIN and Mica Coca, co-founders of Nite Dykez.

Black queer women present a musical journey from the 1970s to now. An intergenerational history of music that has graced QTIPOC dance floor culture.

Guests should expect the old-school sound system sounds of Lovers Rock, Reggae, and Dub, moving smoothly into the sounds of house, from Chicago, Detroit, ballroom, club classics, and all that lies in between.

Yvonne said: “It feels very special to be back in Brixton. The place where I first began doing club events for my community in London.”

GIN said: “I feel proud to be able to collaborate with one of the most legendary sound systems for black people from the 1880s to now.

Nite Dykez had always fused together an intergenerational sound journey into our DJ sets. It’s so exciting to connect with the original champions of the movement and Brixton.”

Market Row’s Street Party will take place from 7pm –11:30pm. Entry is free before 8pm, or £5 after.
