There’s no place like home – that’s the saying, isn’t it?

The old proverb suggests that where you live should be a place of comfort, something to be cherished and loved – somewhere where you want to stay and feel safe.

No one wants to live in a home where there is a constant, nagging sense of foreboding.

A belief that at any time your home might be consumed in a wall of flames.

No one wants to live like that, no one should live like that.

So why are the residents living in the Sceaux Gardens Estate in Camberwell feeling exactly that right now?

Why do they go to bed at night fearing it could be their last?

People living in Marie Curie House on the estate now know they have been living in a block that has serious fire safety issues.

The block is plagued with the same faults as sister block Lakanal House where six people died in a fire at the block in 2009.

We are still waiting to read the report on why Southwark council failed to complete safety works on Marie Curie at the same time as on Lakanal House.

Let’s ensure that all residents living in South London are living in homes that are safe, warm, clean and comforting. It’s the decent thing to do.

Her Majesty The Queen suffered a similar blow to her home in 1992 when Windsor Castle was engulfed in flames.

Five years later and a bill of £36.5million ensured she would be able say there is no place like home.

With her Platinum Jubilee coming up, it will be a joyous occasion for all South London royalists to enjoy.

Will you be taking part in the obligatory street party?

It seems that many will be, judging by the number of streets that have been given permission to close their roads to traffic.
