‘A bad 15 minutes’ – Oliver Glasner pinpoints spell where Crystal Palace fell to defeat at Everton
Oliver Glasner says a 15-minute spell at the start of the second half cost his Crystal Palace side as Everton came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles took the lead in the 10th minute when Maxcence Lacroix headed Adam Wharton’s cross back across goal and Marc Guehi poked the ball beyond Jordan Pickford.
Sean Dyche’s side quickly equalised two minutes into the start of the second half when Dwight McNeil curled a stunning left-footed shot from distance around Dean Henderson after Daichi Kamada lost possession.
McNeil doubled his tally and in the 54th minute when Jack Harrison crossed at the back post for the former Burnley winger to slam an effort from a tight angle beyond Henderson.
Palace are now six Premier League games without a win at the start of the season, but Everton picked up their first three points of the season.
“We controlled most of the first half,” said Glasner.
“We had a bad 15 minutes straight after the second half kicked off. We lost the game in these 15 minutes and we lost the moment.
“In the first half, you could hear the crowd booing a little bit, and they were not pleased with the performance of the home team.
“We gave the momentum to Everton straight after half-time. It was an easy goal – our mistake.
“It was a long ball from Pickford – we knew it was always the same after a kick-off. It was a stupid foul in the corner. We cleared the free-kick but lost the ball again. It was a great finish [from McNeil for his first].
“They got the belief back and the momentum. The second goal is again a second phase after a set-play.
“It was a wide free-kick – we cleared it – but we were not ready for the second ball. We tried everything – the players gave everything until the end of the game.
“But you could see we got a little bit nervous at the end because we wanted to get the equaliser.
“We didn’t find the right spaces. They defended with everything they had and celebrated every clearance in their own box.
“Within 15 minutes, we lost the game today. It’s really disappointing.”
