‘A massive club’ – Alfie May’s first words as a Charlton Athletic player

Alfie May says Charlton Athletic are a “massive club” and has stressed the importance of hitting the ground running ahead of the 2023-24 League One campaign.

The Addicks confirmed the signing of the forward from Cheltenham Town on Friday afternoon, with the 30-year-old penning an initial two-year deal at The Valley.

May, who our paper understands has joined for a fee in the region of £250,000, has scored 50 League One goals in 161 appearances.

“There have been a few rumours for the last couple of weeks, but I’m delighted to be here.

“I’m a local lad, so to come back home with my family means a lot. I can’t wait to get started.

“You see the support here and what it brings as a stadium. When it gets going, as a player, you want to be a part of that.

“I like to play on the shoulder. The main thing you will get from me is hard work. That comes from my non-league days. 

“The training facilities are brilliant. I’m getting up to speed now. 

“I have my own goals from the start of the season – I go up in stages of goals and assists. But the main thing, as a collective, is to win games. 

“With the job that we do, you’re in this industry to win games. You want to put performances on week in, week out for the supporters that travel up and down the country. 

“Charlton is a massive club, and you want to be in and around the big clubs – you want to compete. It’s important that we hit the ground running.”
