‘Absolutely sensational’ – QPR boss delivers verdict after victory at Premier League-bound Burnley

QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth said his side were “absolutely sensational” in their 2-1 win over Premier League-bound Burnley on Saturday,

The win moved up to 18th in the Championship table and three points clear of the bottom three, with two games remaining.

Sam Field opened the scoring for the west Londoners midway through the second half. But Vincent Kompany’s side equalised with 14 minutes remaining through Manuel Benson.

However, Chris Martin scored in the 87th minute to hand the ex-Wycombe boss his second win as QPR manager.

“I can’t thank the boys enough for their efforts – they were absolutely sensational,” said Ainsworth.

“We rode our luck a couple of times, I’m not going to gloss over that. Burnley are a hell of a team – no team has come here and beat them.

“They’d had 15 wins and six draws. I said to the boys nobody has tried what we’re going to try today. It’s risky, we sat in and defended.

“The boys had to believe in it and they really did, they took everything on that we said, they ran until they couldn’t run any more, that’s what they had to do to win.

“I’m not going to come here and go toe-to-toe with the best team in the league, no chance.

“It was a brilliant performance. I am really proud. Being a Blackburn lad makes it a little bit sweeter.

“I am in awe of Vincent Kompany and what he’s done here. They deserve to be in the Premier League. It makes the result even sweeter for me – it’s a top result and it goes a long way towards our safety in the Championship.”
