Accrington Stanley 1 Charlton 1 – Addicks no longer in control of their League One destiny

Charlton’s League One play-off hopes are no longer in their own hands after a 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley.

The Addicks looked to be heading for defeat until Chuks Aneke, who so often can be relied upon for an impact off the bench, converted Albie Morgan’s free-kick in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

The South Londoners deserved no more than a point from another poor attacking display and Portsmouth’s 3-1 victory at AFC Wimbledon means that even if Charlton win their remaining two matches – both at home against third-placed Lincoln City and champions Hull City – it might not be enough to secure a top-six finish.

Accrington substitute Joe Pritchard had put them ahead in the 81st minute with a low strike into the bottom left corner of the net.

And Charlton, just like against Crewe in midweek, struggled to piece together passing moves. Their attempts were not helped against an Accrington side who were happy for the match to become a scrappy and physical affair.

Stanley keeper Toby Savin did beat away an Aneke strike in the 64th minute but the striker’s attempt was from a tight angle. Ryan Inniss headed down and narrowly wide from the resulting corner.

Conor Washington did drive narrowly over the bar early on from Ian Maatsen’s cross from the left but that early promise failed to translate into a confident display by the visitors.

Ben Amos did make a close-range save to deny Colby Bishop in the 68th minute.
