AFC Wimbledon boss Jackson unhappy that dominance doesn’t lead to goals against Morecambe

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson was critical of his side’s inability to score in Tuesday night’s 1-0 loss at Morecambe.

Lee Angol’s 20th-minute goal settled the League Two contest and dented the Dons’ hopes of an automatic promotion spot.

They are now fifth in the standings, four points behind third-placed Doncaster and with a fixture in hand.

“It is a very disappointing outcome,” Jackson told the club’s in-house media. “To come away with nothing in a game we’ve dominated in terms of possession, territory and we have got lots of crosses into their box – a lot of penalty box entries. But no goal to show from it is poor from us.

“The goal we concede has given them a leg up but we had lots of time to chase it. The fact we haven’t been able to claw it back and get something from it is a major frustration.

“I think we implemented our game. We dominated the ball and has 65 per cent possession – a lot of play in their half. We got 33 crosses into the box which is a high number, a lot more than we’ve had recently. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t all fantastic but a lot were decent balls into good areas.

“We either haven’t made the right run, had the right numbers or not been aggressive enough with filling that penalty box to get the goal or force the keeper into a save.

“The pitch is horrendous, let’s be frank, and it is not easy to play your patterns and dominate the ball but we did that. That (not being able to implement their game) isn’t why we lost the game. We lost the game because we gave them a soft goal from a set-piece.

“It is a bit unfortunate. OG (Owen Goodman) and Hutch (Sam Hutchinson) collide and Hutch is down on the floor, so we’re a man down from that and they score a second phase off that.

“I said to the group in there – and they said it to each other- there are too many good players and firepower for us not to be scoring from the opportunies we created. That is the whole team. I’m not singling out the forwards or the wingers. I want my centre-halves to chip in with golas because we get some good deliveries from set-pieces as well.”
