AFC Wimbledon head coach Mark Robinson: Some of my comments misinterpreted
Mark Robinson reckons that some of his comments when he first took the AFC Wimbledon job were taken out of context.
The Dons face Charlton today at Plough Lane and know a victory could lift them out of the League One bottom four.
Head coach Robinson has been paying little attention to the standings. He said: “I don’t look at it regularly at all. But I’m not silly – you hear things that if we had won Tuesday night then we’d have come out of the relegation spaces.
“But I don’t study it, because the reality is if we win games then we’re going to come out of it.
“Everyone felt a bit negative after the Burton result [a 1-0 loss] but then you look at what they are doing now – they are the form side in the league. They had one chance [on target] and we had two.
“I’m quite aware of the fact we have got to turn draws into wins. My words were misinterpreted when I got the job and talked about performances. If you speak to any managers it is the performance that gives you a solid base to work off of.
“The next layer of performance is more goals and taking leads. Walking around the changing room shouting: ‘We have got to win, got to win’ doesn’t bring about winning.
“We have got a squad which is very defence and midfield heavy. We have a lack of attacking options.
“It is always about the how. How are the goals going to come? In the games before we tried to get midfield runners. George [Dobson] scored the other night and we wanted to get midfielders around Joe [Pigott] to support him. It didn’t really happen against Bristol Rovers until Ollie [Palmer] came on.
“On Tuesday night the front two didn’t have enough threat, whether that was that the crosses were not good enough. But we scored a goal when a midfielder broke into the penalty area.
“We have to keep working on that but we’ve only had an hour and a half on the training pitch in between games. Next week we have got a full week and hopefully can do extra work with the players.”
