AFC Wimbledon receive record academy fee as Manchester City land England keeper

AFC Wimbledon have announced that they have received a record fee for an academy player after confirming Spike Brits has left to join Manchester City.

The Premier League champions won the race for the England U16 international, with Brighton and Brentford also keen on landing his signature.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were keeping tabs on Brits earlier in the season.

Brits has trained with Wimbledon’s first-team goalkeepers Nik Tzanev and Nathan Broome and was named on the bench for their London Senior Cup game against Balham in October.

He is the next in line of a long list of exciting goalkeepers to have come through the Wimbledon academy, with Matthew Cox, Joe Whitworth, Josef Bursik and Will Mannion all spending time with the club’s academy.

Brits said on Twitter: “From being a five-year-old fan, to making my international debut – this club has been with me through it all.

“I hope to one day return and push the club to the heights it belongs, but until then, I wish everyone at the club all the best in the future for what’s to come.”
