AFC Wimbledon were already Plymouth bound when EFL Trophy tie was postponed

AFC Wimbledon had already set off for their round of 16 EFL Trophy tie away to League One side Plymouth Argyle when they found out the game had been called off.

A pitch inspection on Monday afternoon at Home Park following freezing temperatures led to the postponement of the fixture.

The Dons, who are unbeaten in their previous seven League Two outings, progressed through to this stage of the competition following their 1-0 win over Sutton United.

League One promotion hopefuls Plymouth beat Charlton in the last round to set up their home tie against Johnnie Jackson’s side.

The fixture will now take place at 7pm on Wednesday, December 21.

The Wimbledon squad had passed Stonehenge before being informed that the game was off.

“Logistically, it has been a bit tricky,” Dons boss Johnnie Jackson told the South London Press. “We got quite far down the road before we had to turn back.

“It’s not ideal, but it is what it is with the weather – it’s not been kind to us.”

Wimbledon take on second-placed Stevenage this Saturday, with Jackson’s side just three points off the League Two play-off positions following their 0-0 draw with Swindon Town.

“We will train now like it’s a normal week,” said the Dons boss. “It gives us more time to prepare. We wanted the game to be on [on Tuesday] because we’re going to have to replay it anyway, but it does give us a chance to go into that Stevenage game a bit fresher.”
